Absolutely no need to apologise-your reaction is quite understandable and justified! The greatest advantage LD will have, though, is parents like you who will love and nurture them ❤️

More than a decade of such a cynical and self seeking government would make anyone feel hopeless and helpless, hence the low turnout to vote and the creeping rise of more extreme political parties, and the system, as you say, never seems to change.

But who would ever have imagined Angela Rayner as Deputy PM, that we would have had a woman PM and an Asian one? The Welfare State and NHS are incredible examples of what the right politicians can achieve and they are not examples of just rearranging the deckchairs.

I believe Kate is absolutely right about thinking of “small community” rather than the overwhelming “ big world” and this can , in time, make a fundamental difference. It has to start somewhere.

Inequality ( in intelligence and aptitude, regardless of wealth) will never not exist but we do live in a country where your daughter ( if LD is one) could be a rugby playing QC if she wanted to and that is progress ❤️

She could, and I would be thrilled if she did. But she would have a harder time, and that is so sad. I am feeling slightly less bleak today, sorry! Xxx

I feel the same way… Paul Kingsnorth’s substack summed up all my thoughts brilliantly today:

‘ Twenty-first century society is so complex, so multilayered and so bureaucratic, with a vast and growing gap between action and impact, that even the people running it don’t know how to make it work. And yet the engines keep humming; accelerating, in fact. At this point the Machine can more or less run by itself. This will be even more obvious as the AI systems come on line and openly replace human actors in any number of fields.

This reality, I think - the reality of powerlessness - is what hums behind the rising tide of despair and cynicism that flows in the veins of our nations and people. We know that we are not really nations. We know that ‘democracy’ is not about changing anything, or exercising any ‘popular will.’ We British know that Brexit changed nothing, and the next government will fail too, just as my American readers know that Joe Biden can barely walk off a stage, let alone run a country. We have all been long colonised by the Black Ships of Machine globalism. We are not in charge. We never were. Recognising the scale of the conquest, I’d say, is the first step to working out what to do about it. ‘

For me, shrinking my thinking from ‘big world’ to ‘small community’ eases the overwhelm (albeit temporarily) if that makes sense? I’m worried about the world Eddie will enter but so happy and excited to curate his experience of it as much as I can, seeking the love and glimmers today!
